“Bars” used to be my favorite snack — not candy bars, but nutritional or protein bars. I had this notion that if bars were well-balanced in terms of fat, carbohydrate, and protein counts, and they were labeled as nutritional or protein bars, they had to be healthy. (Yes, I’m a recovering Zone dieter. I still see each meal through the 40, 30, 30 rule.) But I never thought to look at how many grams of sugar my sweet afternoon snack contained, or whether or not the ingredients were actually whole foods. But I did notice the sugar alcohols, because they didn’t count as carbohydrates at all! (This was before I became a fitness instructor, started training for endurance events, and realized that without carbohydrates there was no energy. At that time in my life, I thought that carbohydrates were evil. Thanks, Dr. Sears.)
My afternoon snack was usually a Zone Bar or a Balance Bar until I went gluten free, and then I learned that both of my bar staples contained gluten. My food world narrowed for a year as I mourned all of the foods I could no longer eat, and then it widened more broadly than I ever thought possible.
And now I’m in love with food that makes my body feel good. I love whole foods, and when convenience foods like nutritional bars actually contain whole foods, I’m a huge fan.
At first, Lara Bars were my only gluten-free bar option. They are very tasty once you’ve cleansed your palate of non-foods, and they’re packed with whole foods like dates, almonds, unsweetened apples, walnuts, raisins, and cinnamon. Now that’s the kind of food that I can feel good about eating. The only drawback is that Lara Bars only contain about 4 grams of protein. I’ve found that with my active lifestyle I need more than that.
Today I’m highlighting a Friday’s Find that has the perfect balance.
Vixi Bars are natural food bars that contain 12 grams of natural whey protein. They’re also gluten free, soy free, lactose free, non GMO, and they are free from added sugar and preservatives. Rich in fiber, these bars also contain a short list of real foods that you can feel good about eating. Just look at the ingredients in the Cherry Brownie Vixi Bar: Dates, Almonds, Cherries, Natural Whey Protein (non-rBGH isolate and concentrate), Cocoa Powder, Organic Cacao, Natural Vanilla and Caramel Flavor.
Each Vixi Bar I sampled was chewy, sweet, and packed with flavor. A few of them, like Peanut Butter Cup and Pumpkin Pie, even tasted like a decadent dessert.
I sampled Peanut Butter Cup, Pumpkin Pie, Chocolate Macaroon, and Cherry Brownie, and I can honestly say that I enjoyed every one. (Of course the decadent dessert types were my favorites.)
Where can you find Vixi Bars? You can only order them online right now, but hopefully soon we’ll be seeing them at local retailers. They are THAT good.
My favorite bars usually have chocolate, so Chocolate Macaroon or Peanut Butter Cup might be my first order, but other flavors might strike your fancy.
How do these flavors sound? Coconut Bliss, Apple Crisp, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Peppermint Patty, Cherry Biscotti, and Peanut Butter Banana…
