Raw Foods Thursdays: 10/17/13

I love how sneaky raw foodies are. They can serve ice cream to guests and never let on that they just whipped up frozen bananas and drizzled in a raw cacao sauce. They can fool their kids into drinking kale in Green Monster Smoothies. They can make veggie sandwiches on bread made from carrot pulp. Raw Foodies are definitely creative when sneaking raw nutrients into their meals.

Last week there was a lot of sneakiness going on at Raw Foods Thursdays. Take a look at some of these recipes that were shared.

What are Raw Foods Meals?

  • Plant-based meals that are not cooked.  Dehydrators may be used.  (The raw foods community has differing views on temperature, but the range is between 104 and 118 degrees.) Feel free to link up recipes that use a slightly higher temperature as long as they could be made at 118 with a longer dry time.
  • Raw Ingredients: vegetables, fruit, dried fruit, nuts, seeds, gluten-free sprouted grains, beans, and oils.

What isn’t raw?

  • Anything cooked or heated above 118.
  • Anything processed.  If it comes from a can or a package that lists more than one ingredient, chances are it’s not raw!
  • If your recipe contains an ingredient like maple syrup that makes your submission “almost raw”, please share it anyway. Raw sweeteners are easy to substitute.

    I was hesitant to share my new smoothie recipe, as it has baked ingredient, but I see that Tessa shared hers smoothie with baked pumpkin, so I’m in.

    This week I am sharing a delicious smoothie combination. Butternut, Coconut, and Hemp.

    • Amber, that’s why I added a “mostly raw” category to Raw Foods Thursdays. My passion is whole foods, raw or not. Pure foods make me giddy so I’m thrilled that you shared your smoothie! I’m off to find it!

      (I giggled at a friend who recently posted on facebook that he had a secret ingredient for his morning smoothie. TWIX BARS! Oh my!!!)
