Juice Generation: Day 30!

Day 30 of my New Year’s Juicing Challenge is finally here! While breezing around the City running errands, I hit an energy lull. A serious energy lull. But I still had one more stop and 6 more blocks to haul my bags of groceries. While I was telling myself just to power through, I literally looked up, saw this storefront, and thanked the Lord.


Inside I found bottles of cold pressed juices.


In all sorts of delicious combinations.


And a juice bar!


Do you think that produce rack would fit in my NYC kitchen? Of course my eyes immediately scanned the Fresh Juices menu to find exactly what I needed…PURE ENERGY.


But they also have:

  • Smoothies
  • Acai Bowls
  • Shots and Boosts
  • Raw Foods
  • Vegan Soups
  • Baked Goods

For a 20-ounce juice I paid just under $10.00. I thought that was a little steep, but I reminded myself that I live in a City where someone will make juice for me at precisely the place and time that I need it.

I am completely ready for this New Year’s Juicing Challenge to be over. I’ve been sailing along for the past three weeks, but this last week has been a bear. I went from exercising 4 days last week to not exercising at all this week and having headaches. I think my body is telling me that it’s time to be finished. Plus, I believe I’ve made every possible veggie/fruit juice combination imaginable, and quite frankly, I’m bored. I’m ready for food!

This is Day 28 of 30, and I do intend to finish, but I also intend to keep with my original guidelines. The most important guideline is to listen to my body. Right now I need more fuel. This week I started blending a banana into my morning fruit juice and a half avocado into my green juice, and that seems to be helping my energy level. I also foresee a raw blended soup in my immediate future instead of juicing the ingredients.

Enough about me. It’s Raw Foods Thursdays, and I would like to sink my teeth into every submission from last week. Please indulge me while I highlight a few submissions that crunch.

What are Raw Foods Meals?

  • Plant-based meals that are not cooked.  Dehydrators may be used.  (The raw foods community has differing views on temperature, but the range is between 104 and 118 degrees.) Feel free to link up recipes that use a slightly higher temperature as long as they could be made at 118 with a longer dry time.
  • Raw Ingredients: vegetables, fruit, dried fruit, nuts, seeds, gluten-free sprouted grains, beans, and oils.

What isn’t raw?

  • Anything cooked or heated above 118.
  • Anything processed.  If it comes from a can or a package that lists more than one ingredient, chances are it’s not raw!
  • If your recipe contains an ingredient like maple syrup that makes your submission “almost raw”, please share it anyway. Raw sweeteners are easy to substitute.

Organic Avenue Love Deep Cleanse: Day 27

I’m back to making my own juices now that my week of Organic Avenue deliveries has come to an end. Just a few more days to complete my 30 day goal! I had such a wonderful experience with Organic Avenue that I wanted to tell you all about it.

Organic Avenue has three different levels of cleanses:

  • LOVE Easy – a beginners cleanse that combines a booster shot, juices, and raw meals.
  • LOVE Fast – an intermediate cleanse consisting of a booster, juices, mylk, raw soup, and a raw meal.
  • LOVE Deep – an “expert” cleanse consisting of a booster, juices, and a mylk.

The LOVE Deep Cleanse comes as a 3-day, 5-day, and 7-day program.  Since Organic Avenue was having a 30% of sale, I decided to go for the 7-day to give myself a week break from juicing in my baby NYC kitchen. This is what I received on the first day.


My juice for the day was delivered to my home, free of charge, between 6:00 and 8:00am. I immediately opened the box and labeled each bottle with the time they recommended consuming it. This made it easy for me to toss the bottles I needed throughout the day into my lunch bag and save the rest in the refrigerator for later.


8:00 – 9:00 am The Booster Shot

Each day began with a booster shot.


  • E3 Live Shot – It doesn’t taste great, but when you know that you’re getting 64 vitamins, minerals, and enzymes from blue algae, it’s much easier to get down.
  • Aloe – This tastes sour, which surprised me as I’ve taken aloe in the past and it didn’t have a taste at all. Aloe is great for detoxification and decreases inflammation in the digestive tract.
  • Wheatgrass – LOVE, love, love! By far the most deliciously sweet shot. The benefits of wheatgrass seem to be endless, but it’s well known for it’s detoxifying properties as well as its ability to increase red blood-cell count.
  • Chlorophyll – Brush your teeth and tongue afterwards if you don’t want to leave the house looking like you just ate a green lollipop. It regenerates and cleanses the body on a cellular level, so it’s worth looking a little like a toddler.

9:00-10:00 am Fruit Juice

Now we’re hungry and we’re ready for our first juice of the day. One of the following fruit juices came each day.


Orange Juice – 100% pure orange juice. I added vanilla protein powder to this on the days that started with a workout which made it taste like an orange julius.

Grapefruit Juice – 100% pure grapefruit juice! Delicious, but I missed the ginger that I put in my Morning Zinger.

Royal Red – Packed with antioxidants and powerfully delicious with carrot, beet, orange, pear, pineapple, ginger, and lemon. I love this juice.

11:00 am -12:00 pm Green Juice

Next was one of the following green juices:


Sweet Greens – Sweet pear, orange, and hydrating cucumber balance the intensity of Swiss chard, kale, and collard greens. A touch of lemon and mint finishes it off.

Mellow Love –  A smooth combination of romaine, celery, cucumber, spinach, and parsley.

Green Coco – Wonderfully hydrating with organic young Thai coconut water, green chard, romaine, spinach, kale, and celery.

Green Love – Pear and lemon sweeten up a concentrated combination of dark leafy greens including kale, Swiss chard, spinach, parsley, collard greens, and romaine.

Medicinal Green – This one had to grow on me. I finally came to appreciate the kick from the garlic, turmeric, cayenne pepper mixed with cucumber, Swiss chard, spinach, collard greens, kale, lemon, and Himalayan salt.

1:00 – 2:00 pm Tonic

The early afternoon tonics gave a little boost during a busy time of day.


Master Tonic – Flashback! Have you ever done the Master Cleanse? One sip and you’ll be flashing back. Maple syrup, lemon, and cayenne pepper is the original Master drink, but Organic Avenue uses coconut sugar instead of maple syrup. Very tasty.

Ginger Lemonade – Sweet and tangy with a kick of ginger, this was by far my favorite tonic. Purified alkaline water, lemon, lime, ginger, and coconut sugar provided a great boost.

Turmeric Tonic – This was my least favorite. In fact, I didn’t like it at all. It may be that the spices are gritty and collect at the bottom of the bottle. Ingredients: purified alkaline water, ginger, coconut sugar, lemon juice, turmeric, cardamom, black pepper, cayenne pepper, Himalayan salt

3:00 – 4:00 pm Vegetable Juice

My favorite time of day! I’d come home from work and sit down to a tall glass of…


Carrot Juice – Yes, pure organic carrot juice. It tastes like candy. Have you ever tried 100% carrot juice? It’s out of this world. I didn’t even miss the fact that none of my boxes included the alternate veggie juice called Veggie Vibe.

5:00 – 6:00 pm Green Juice

Early evening brought another one of the 5 green juices.


7:00 – 8:00 pm Mylk

And the best part of the day was ending it with one of these.


Cashew Hemp Mylk – I love love LOVE this milk. It was such a treat right before bed. More decadent than my version of Cashew Hemp Milk, this one has organic coconut sugar.

Coconut Mylk – Thick and dreamy, this creamy delight is made from 100% Organic Coconut Meat and 100% Organic Thai Coconut Water. That means it’s 200% delicious if I’m doing my math correctly. Seriously, it’s so thick that it pours out of the bottle like a pudding. What a great way to end the day.

Having Organic Avenue cater to me during the third week of my cleanse was the refreshing break that I needed. Now just a few more days of juicing on my own to meet my goal. I would highly recommend Organic Avenue’s LOVE Deep Cleanse. The juices are top quality, the variety keeps you interested and properly fueled, and customer service can not be beat.

I’ve been making almond milk for years and absolutely love it. I love everything about it.

  • I love knowing every pure ingredient that goes into my milk.
  • I love how the milk drizzles between my fingers as I squeeze it through the nut milk bag.
  • I love that it’s incredibly easy to make.
  • I love the sweet taste and the creamy texture.
  • I love how much better it tastes than store-bought versions.
  • I love that it is actually cheaper than store-bought versions.
  • I love that all you need is a high-speed blender, a bowl, and a nut milk bag. (Don’t let the nut milk bag scare you. I missed out on years of homemade nut milk because I didn’t have a bag. They cost less than $10!)
  • I love that you can use the almond pulp to make delicious treats. (See links below!)

I really can’t believe that I’m on Day 25 of this New Year’s Juicing Challenge. As I mentioned on Day 1, I had never juiced longer than 13 days before. And I truly believe that the reason I’ve been able to go this long is three fold:

1. Homemade nut milks
2. Chia seeds in nut milks
3. Sunwarrior Protein Powder in nut milks

Yes, it’s all about the nut milk. While most of my day is pure juice, I have 1 or two glasses of nut milk each day, and I believe the extra protein and fat has made all the difference.

I found a new nut milk love that I wanted to share with you today. This Creamy Dreamy Lucama Almond Milk tastes so good, and it has a velvety texture.


I just added a tablespoon of this superfood to my regular almond milk recipe.


Lucama powder is a low-glycemic sweetener with a hint of maple caramel taste. It contains beta-carotene, iron, zinc, vitamin B3, calcium, and protein. I’ve only purchased the Nativa brand. Let me know if you’ve found a brand that you like better.

Creamy Dreamy Lucama Almond Milk

1. Soak almonds in a bowl of water overnight.

2. Drain almonds and rinse.

3. Pour 6 cups of filtered water in the Vitamix or high-powered blender and add dates. Leave for 10-20 minutes to soften the dates before blending.

4. Add almonds to the Vitamix and blend on high until liquified.

5. Pour contents of the Vitamix through a nut milk bag, reserving the milk in a large bowl.

6. Stir in Lucuma Powder, vanilla, and seasalt.

7. To make it really creamy, return the contents of the bowl to the Vitamix and blend for 5 seconds.

8. Serve or chill.

Yields 8 cups

I can’t believe that I’m almost finished with my New Year’s Juicing Challenge. It has been much easier that I thought it would be, but juicing does curtail your social events, and when you’re doing it alone it can feel kind of isolating. But going out and having fun isn’t out of the question when you’re juicing in NYC.

That reminds me, do you remember how excited I was on Day 1 about doing this challenge with a group of friends? Well, I’m the only one who actually started it! So I’m doubly thankful for supportive readers like you. I appreciate your encouragement and enjoy hearing how your juicing endeavors have been going.

Everyone goes to brunch on Sundays in New York City. It’s not a matter of if you’re going to brunch. That’s assumed. It’s where you’re going to brunch. We have several restaurants in our neighborhood that serve gluten-free, vegan meals, and thankfully they also happen to serve juice too. So going out for Sunday Brunch hasn’t changed while on this juice cleanse.


These juices are from Blossom, my absolute favorite vegan brunch spot. I have sampled every juice on this menu, and it’s hard to say whether the Pink Lady or the Ruby Red is my favorite. The green juices are good too, I just make them a lot at home so the others are more fun for “out for juice” drinks.


Last weekend I asked the Husband if he wanted to go hang out at a bar. His response was “I feel like this is a trick question.” It was and it wasn’t. We did hang out at a bar, but it was a juice bar at Peacefood Cafe. I was excited to try their Asian Roots juice with green daikon, sweet potato, apple, and ginger.

I loved this juice and can’t wait to make it at home.


They call this one The Hangover Cure with apple, orange, carrot, celery, and ginger.

Perfect for brunch.

Last night we went out for dinner with friends at Spring Natural Kitchen, another favorite neighborhood restaurant. They serve cold-pressed juices along with a beautiful menu with many gluten-free, vegan options. They even have homemade gluten-free bread!


I meant to try several of their juices, but the Watermelon Pineapple was so good that I had to have two.

I realize that I’m in a unique situation in New York City. Not everyone has 5 different juice bars within a few blocks of their home. But on Day 24 I’m incredibly thankful to be living in such a juice-friendly city!

Good morning, sunshines! It’s Day 20 of my New Year’s Juicing Challenge, and I’ve got a fabulous juice to share with you. It’s actually a twist on the Morning Zinger as it has a grapefruit and ginger base. I got this idea from a Facebook post by the Juice Brothers in Nashville. Check them out!


This juice has a magical ingredient that has me all excited. Turmeric! This wonder root is best known as a key ingredient in curry. It’s also great for getting that bright yellow color in your raw cheeses. I’ve been hearing about the health benefits of turmeric in the media lately, so when The Juice Brothers suggested juicing it I was all about it.


Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory and its benefits seem to be endless:

  • Treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Relief for Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Prevention of Cancer cell growth
  • Help for Cystic Fibrosis
  • Prevention of Colon Cancer
  • Halts Prostate Cancer
  • Protects against Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Lowers Cholesterol
  • Improves Liver Function

You may not have access to the turmeric root. I was thrilled to find these nubby little fingerlings at my local Whole Foods. If you can’t find any, this recipe can also be made with ground turmeric.


Either juice the turmeric root with the other ingredients or add the powder afterwards.

  • 2 grapefruits, peeled
  • 2 carrots, peeled
  • 2 inches of ginger root
  • 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder or 6 inches tumeric root
  • 1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper


1. Run fruits and roots through the juicer.

2. Add spices and whisk to mix.

Yields 2 1/4 cups of juice

Did you know that you could juice broccoli? I first learned about it when I read Lindsay Loves Veggie’s post on Broccoli Stem Green Juice. I was so excited about it that I begged her to submit her recipe to Raw Foods Thursdays and then highlighted her recipe the following week.

Broccoli and I  have an interesting relationship. I love broccoli that’s steamed, drizzled with a little olive oil, garlic, lemon combination, and served al dente. But how often can one enjoy such broccoli perfection? It’s usually served over cooked, mushy, a brownish-grey color, or cold. Shudder. But once in a while it’s prepared perfectly, and it’s so good that the very next day I purchase a head of broccoli, determined to recreate the perfect steamed broccoli.

The broccoli sits in a bag in my produce drawer.

And it sits.

And sits.

Until it’s barely usable, I chop off a few florets for a salad, and throw the stems away.


I still rarely steam broccoli, but right now I’m enjoying fresh broccoli, stem and florets, juiced in this Green Apple Pie Juice.


Green Apple Pie Juice

  • 5 small apples (or 3 large)
  • 1 head of broccoli with stem
  • 1 handful of parsley
  • 1/2 lemon, peeled
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon


1. Put apples, broccoli, parsley, and lemon through your juicer.

2. Add cinnamon and whisk to mix.

3. Serve.

Makes 2 1/4 cups

I’ve made it into the double digits of my New Year’s Juicing Challenge! I’m still feeling really good. In fact, I think I have more energy this week than last. Now I wouldn’t want to go running, but I do feel good. I buzz about my day without even thinking about the fact that I’m not eating solid food. I enjoy the smell of good food walking by restaurants or cooking for the Husband. But I’m not craving it. Yet.

I mentioned on Day 6 that I enjoy a thicker juice or nut milk in the evenings. It ends my day with more of a satisfied feeling and prevents me from waking up hungry in the middle of the night. This Spicy Avocado Soup is simply juiced vegetables pureed with one avocado. This recipe serves 2, so in a half avocado I’m getting 15 grams of heart-healthy unsaturated fat, and 2 grams of saturated fat that leave me feeling satisfied. Plus, avocados are a good source of fiber, potassium, and vitamins C, K, folate, and B6.

And it’s delicious. The Husband calls it Liquid Guacamole. So if you’ve ever wanted to drink your guacamole, this is your chance.

I’ve tried a few different versions, and this is my favorite.


I’ve tried it with a half jalapeno and a whole. Half isn’t quite spicy enough for my taste buds, but let me warn you that juicing a whole jalapeno packs a powerful punch. Also, be careful breathing deeply around the juicer when juicing jalapeno. The molecules in the air can get caught in your throat creating coughing fits. Yes, I speak from experience.

Spicy Avocado Soup

  • 2 c. spinach
  • 5 vine-ripened tomatoes (or 3 large beefsteak)
  • 3-4 celery stalks
  • 1 handful of cilantro
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1/2-1 jalapeno
  • 1/2 lime
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. cumin
  • 1 avocado


1. Put spinach, tomatoes, celery, cilantro, garlic, and jalapeno through the juicer.

2. Pour juice into the Vitamix or blender and add the juice of 1/2 lime, salt, cumin, and avocado.

3. Blend until creamy.

Serves 2

It’s Day 6 of my New Year’s Juicing Challenge, and I’m off to work, armed with several bottles of juice, of course.

How’s it going? Really well, actually. Right now the Husband is juicing with me, so that makes for more time in the kitchen, but he’ll be finished in a few days which will obviously cut the kitchen time down.

I’ve fallen into a rhythm which looks a little like this:

  • I start each day with my normal concoction of lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, cayenne pepper, and cinnamon in a quart of warm water. (If you don’t already know the health benefits of this simple daily ritual, google it. It’s a powerhouse of health!)
  • Then I make 3 different types of juices for the day. I store them in mason jars and transport them to work in recycled bottles.
  • Breakfast is a variation of The Morning Zinger consisting of grapefruit and ginger. I’ll be sharing my favorite variation next week.
  • At least one of the two other juices is a leafy green juice featuring kale, romaine, or spinach, because leafy greens are one of the most concentrated sources of nutrition.
  • Throughout the day, I drink a glass of juice when I’m hungry and then follow it with a glass of water. I end up drinking juice about every 2-3 hours (which also means lots of trips to the bathroom).
  • It’s nice to have something thicker to drink in the evening. I’ll share recipes soon for my Spicy Avocado Soup and Cashew Hemp Milk.
  • I feel good enough to do something active each day like a long walk or yoga. This is not the time for running, spin class, or a pushup challenge.
  • My caffeine habit has almost been kicked. I’m down to 2 cups of green tea each day. Take THAT, coffee!
  • I get tired earlier in the evening, which just means I go to bed earlier and get more sleep. Nice.

Now for a juice recipe!

It’s no wonder that Popeye’s green of choice was spinach as it’s filled with nutrients, minerals, and vitamins, specifically vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, E, K, iron, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium. It also has loads of chlorophyll, which combined with iron is great for detoxing the blood and increases it’s oxygen-carrying capacity. Spinach juice is also good for brain function, which apparently I need after my pigeon hallucination yesterday. Spinach also has anti-cancer properties, specifically in the cases of breast, skin, stomach, ovarian, and prostate cancers. Cancer has a hard time growing where there are high levels of chlorophyll and carotene. Go, spinach!

So you may want to have a spinach salad today, or try my Sweet Popeye Nectar for something a little different.

Sweet Popeye Nectar

  • 1 5 oz. box of spinach (4-5 cups)
  • 2 cucumbers, peeled
  • 3 apples
  • 1/2 lemon, peeled
  • 1 large handful of parsley


1. Juice all ingredients.

2. Serve.

Makes 3 1/2 cups of juice

A Curious Girl in the Gluten-Free World

I've made the transition from baking and cooking gluten-free to creating raw vegan recipes that are naturally gluten free. My gluten intolerance opened up my diet to a whole new world of nutritious plant-based foods. While I'm not 100% vegan, it's my favorite way to eat, and making and sharing raw foods makes me giddy.
